I’ve been building retaining walls round the Gold Coast for a fair chunk of my life. Lost count how many to be honest. Started out as a young bloke digging holes in Nerang clay that’d snap your shovel if you weren’t careful. These days I’ve built ‘em from Miami to Reedy Creek and every bit of ground’s got its own mood. Palm Beach sand’s soft and easy till the wind gets up. Nerang? That clay’s a nightmare. Turns to rock in the dry sticks to your boots like glue in the wet. You finish a day there and you’ve grown an inch from the mud on your soles. And don’t get me started on that salty breeze. Eats everything. I’ve seen bolts rust before I finished the job. Anyway lately everyone’s been asking about these composite sleepers. Made from plastic and wood fibre. Pretty modern stuff. Looks tidy. But then they ask "Mate what’s better composite or concrete? " And I just laugh. |
